After Ronaldo’s move, we won’t question influencer marketing ever again

Cristiano Ronaldo has once more been one of the stars at the European championship, but it’s not his success that the world is talking about.

During his pre-match press conference, he was sitting with two Coca-Cola bottles in front of him. He promptly removed them from the camera view with a disguise on his face and replaced them with a bottle of water.

After this 3-second move, Coca-Cola’s market value has dropped by $3.9 billion!

So if you were wondering if influencer marketing is effective, this might be the answer you are looking for.

Influencer marketing isn’t a new concept anymore, thus is not making any shiny headlines. That’s the main reason why the majority of people believe it’s not working.

However, it’s stronger than ever.

People are more likely to engage in action if they see other people doing it, be it their family, friends, or celebrities. In psychology, this motivating force is called the bandwagon effect.

Talking about this effective marketing tactic, not only Ronaldo’s fans followed his actions, but his colleagues as well.

Other players tried to grab the spotlight as well, such as Andriy Yarmolenko, who removed Haineken’s bottle, and Romelu Lukaku who removed Coca-Cola’s bottle as well.

Brands are reacting as well.

Ikea’s released a water bottle named Cristiano, and their post went viral immediately. We didn’t expect anything less from IKEA, anyway.

How to use influencer marketing to achieve your goals

Now that you’ve faced the power of influencer marketing, you are probably thinking about how you can use it to promote your business (without getting a second mortgage for it).

If you were thinking about Cristiano Ronaldo promoting your business, you’ll probably have to pay around half a million dollars for a single post. If you don’t have that money to shell out for a single Instagram post, you might want to consider the following tips.

1)  Start with influencers that you know. Or find out what influencers your target audience prefers.

Influencers don’t have to have a huge following for your campaign to be successful. They only need to have engaged followers. If you are seeing that they are getting tons of honest comments, you should already know that people trust them.

2) Don’t expect them to work for free.

Even though you might find some people that will promote your business in exchange for a free product, there are few of those influencers. Each of them has its own terms, so this is something that you (or your marketing agency) will have to negotiate with them.

3) Make the most of your influencer marketing campaign – hire multiple influencers at once

If a person sees someone on Instagram using your product, they might become interested in it, but they’ll forget about it in a matter of minutes.

But if your product starts appearing on multiple profiles, your audience will eventually become so curious that they won’t be able to avoid learning about your product.

What benefits can you expect from your influencer marketing campaign?

As we mentioned earlier, influencer marketing is extremely powerful, and it can bring multiple benefits such as brand awareness and follower growth. But, most importantly – it can skyrocket your sales.

However, don’t be fooled that influencer marketing is easy. Just like any other marketing campaign, it takes time and energy.

You’ll have to…

  • find appropriate influencers with followers interested in your product. For example, there’s no point in hiring a fisherman to promote your night body lotion.
  • Reach out to them and negotiate. Not every influencer will even bother to answer, and not everyone will offer terms acceptable to you (and your budget)
  • Coordinate the campaign.
  • Follow up with influencers and measure results
  • Repeat if it works, improve if it’s not working.

If you are not willing to invest yourself in taking this task seriously, you might want to reach out to an agency offering influencer marketing services.

That’s all today, we hope that you liked this article enough to share it with your LinkedIn connections. Who knows, you might be as influential as Cristiano, and help us spread the word.

In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you think about collaborating with influencers in the comments.

Talk to you soon!
