Influencers in Norway will have to disclose photoshopped images

Enlarged lips, embellished cheekbones, pronounced waists, and muscles that have been narrowed will soon require a declaration in Norway when the law comes into effect.

Unfortunately, the influence of influencers and celebrities is enormous on social network users. We have already had the opportunity to see what tricks they use and how they deceive their followers on social networks.

What is illegal now?

“It is illegal to upload retouched and arranged photos on social networks without mentioning it” could describe the law passed by the Norwegian parliament to “reduce the pressure on society” by influencers in the shortest possible time.

“The pressure is always present, often invisible and difficult to fight, “said the Ministry of Children and Family Affairs, which put the bill to parliament for a vote, and he agreed almost unanimously.

Why Norway brought the new law

The law has raised the huge issue of portraying women in society, the pressure of beauty, and the consequences of an unhealthy climate that creates insecurity, dissatisfaction, and severe psychological implications.

The ideals, which the influencers present on their profiles, have on the mental health of children and youth, especially younger girls.

In explaining the law, the Ministry stated that editing photos lead to social insecurity, low self-esteem, and the pressure of seeing one’s own body. The law says that “any photograph, in which the shape, size or skin of the body has been changed by retouching, must be marked as edited.”

The rule has provoked a heated debate

On platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter, influencers will have to indicate that they processed the post in Photoshop or some other photo editing program and whether they passed it through filters.

This law also requires celebrities to indicate in their online posts that their photos are sponsored, i.e., to profit from the publication.

The new rule has provoked a heated debate among the public, which believes that the law will be challenging to apply because it would be difficult to determine which photos were changed in its violation. The vast majority of people, most of them influencers, described the law as “advanced.”

What will happen to those who don’t follow new rules?

Social networks have often been criticized for cultivating harmful content and encouraging anxiety and depression, especially among younger audiences.

All those offenders who do not follow the new rules can face high sentences and even imprisonment in extreme cases. The move came from growing concerns about the impact of social media on users’ mental health.

The king has the last word

This measure, which has shaken the world of influencers, represents a solid contribution to combating the negative influence of social networks. The ideals of beauty ruin people’s self-confidence, especially when it comes to children and young people.

The last step in the fight against unrealistic ideals of beauty requires the approval of the Norwegian king.
