Keywords are the core of any website’s SEO strategy, so you need to use them wisely throughout pages. Without relevant keywords, users will be unable to find your website when searching for an answer to a problem they have.

When choosing the wrong keywords that don’t meet your potential visitors’ expectations, your SEO strategy becomes useful. Many people tend to forget about it, and they choose keywords that won’t increase traffic to the website nor improve the conversion rate.

Allowing Clients to Choose Keywords

One of the most significant keyword research mistakes is failing to do keyword research. How is that even possible?

It happens when your client wants to “help .” Telling you what keywords they need to target is not helpful, unfortunately. Those words and terms are usually too broad, too competitive, and do not match search intent.

If a client has a list with keywords, great, that should be a starting point but not an ending one.

Keywords need to be based on data and not on instinct.

Singular and plural are not the same keywords

 

One of the most common mistakes that often lead to failure occurs when people don’t realize the difference between singular and plural keywords. 

Both single and plural keywords have to be considered separately as they will not compete with each other for site traffic. For example, category pages in an online store should appear in the search results in the plural (e.g., summer dresses), while product pages should appear in the singular (e.g., short red elegant dress).

Focusing on a single keyword

 

Even if it has a high search volume, focusing on just one keyword is wrong. This way, you will miss the chance of ranking higher on other alike keywords. This mistake is frequently made during creating content on blogs and websites and optimizing it.

Try to find synonyms, and include different keywords inside the text. As a result, the content will look more natural and won’t give the impression of being created just for SEO.

Targeting unprofitable keywords 

You have decided to target a keyword with relatively low competition and decent traffic, but you might still not make money with it. Why? Because that keyword is the unprofitable one.

Keywords themselves don’t bring you profit but bring traffic and people. Profitable keywords are the ones that will attract people ready to try your service and buy your product.

You need to understand where you expect your profit to come from, research generating ideas, and match profit strategy with a keyword search intent.
